ASSITEJ International (International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People) unites theatres, organisations and individuals from around the world who make theatre for children and young people.

As part of the ASSITEJ networks created to strengthen these spaces of exchange and opportunity is the ASSITEJNext Generation Programme’ (NG Programme) committed to engaging emerging young artists and theatre professionals from around the world interested in Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA).

The ‘Next Generation Residency’ programme is an ASSITEJ International initiative designed to support artistic and cultural exchange and collaboration between international artists under the age of 36 interested in theatre for children and young people at ASSITEJ events.

In 2024, Cuba will host the 21st ASSITEJ World Congress and Performing Arts Festival “Voices of a New World” from 24 May to 1 June in Havana. It is up to artists to hear the emerging voices and give them the space they need. We need new voices for a new world; let us make them heard!

ASSITEJ Cuba and ASSITEJ International invite 15 artists, critics, producers, researchers, from all over the world to participate in the ‘Next Generation Residency’.

The Next Generation programme in Cuba

As part of the Congress, the ASSITEJ Next Generation Programme in Cuba opens its doors to young artists and creators interested in working with children and young audiences, this time under the theme “Community and Identity”.

Why think about community? Why think about Identity? Our aim is to think about identity based on community development, using the performing arts as a fundamental tool.

The residency programme in Havana will include:

  • A stay in a centre for community development and studies in rural areas.
  • Discussions, seminars and workshops
  • A series of workshops and shared moments within the Next Generation group of participants.
  • Networking with theatre professionals from Cuba and the global ASSITEJ
  • A meeting with the ASSITEJ Next Generation Network.
  • Performances for children and young people from the festival “Voices of a new world”.

The National Council for the Performing Arts in Cuba will provide:

  • Accommodation in shared rooms for the duration of the programme.
  • Meals
  • Programme facilitation
  • Transport to and from the community centre

ASSITEJ International will provide:

  • Registration, theatre tickets, seminars and access to workshops.

Participants are expected to pay for their own travel to the festival. Applicants, who are accepted to the programme, can apply for partial travel support from ASSITEJ International.

Next Generation is an inclusive programme and welcomes applications from anyone, without discrimination of any kind.

As an inclusive organisation that champions diversity, we welcome applications that enrich the diversity of the group and represent a wide range of diverse experiences, identities and backgrounds.

The Congress and Festival will be held in English and Spanish. The Next Generation programme will be conducted primarily in Spanish. Bilingual participants are encouraged to support those who have difficulty with either language.
