Book: The Art of Listening in Theatre for Young Audiences

The Babel project started nearly 4 years ago. Activities within the project have been implemented in 11 EU countries and 6 countries on all continents (Indonesia, Jordan, South Africa, Brazil, Cuba and Pakistan). Artists all around the world have met and worked together to perform, to discuss and to reflect on how linguistic and cultural differences are an asset not only in and for our community, but also for children and young people by listening and opening ourselves to them.

A Note from Carole Karemera

Ntho di bonwa ka ho tsamaya is a Sesotho expression meaning “one learns by travelling.” For me, both literal and imaginative journeys constantly water my artistic and personal growth. Whenever I travel, I like to learn about the place; its social, political, cultural, and economic context.

Each new Centre means new voices, new collaborations, and new friendships. Each new Centre means a new connection — a new friend somewhere in the world. Looking back at the Umbrella Session, I see a growing map of faces: people united by art, care, and imagination. Culture connects us beyond borders, and through ASSITEJ, we are reminded that wherever we go, there will always be a friend waiting.

Theatre cannot stop wars. But theatre can present starting points for change. In our work and in our community, curiosity and enquiry are so important – the open hand, mind and heart, being a seeker not a ‘knower’. This meeting at ricca ricca demonstrated that each starting point for change is individual and contextual. Each sense of what is vital to address and each method, different. There is no collective “right way’ of doing things – there cannot be. Our members are facing every imaginable challenge in their different contexts and when we have the chance to connect, we witness the flexibility, invention and divergent approaches that are part of each person’s method in creative process.

Our work spans far beyond geographical boundaries, knowing that every corner of the globe holds profound creative wisdom. From remote Indigenous communities to urban performing arts centres, from community theatres to national institutions, we know that knowledge is not hierarchical but circular. Just as our elders can teach, they equally learn from the young. It’s all about our intention.
