This text is a record of some significant memories of the ‘Bright Generations’ Artistic Gathering, organised by Théâtre Massalia and ASSITEJ France, in March 2025. I'll use a method which will allow myself, at times, to refer to some personal experiences - both from my connection with ASSITEJ and with milestones within the AAG; after all, it was also my 60th birthday. As there were 819 delegates from different countries, I'll mention some people by their first names, so that they symbolise all of us who together made this gathering remarkable, strengthening the importance of the different threads that make up the ASSITEJ fabric. I will also do this to symbolise a phrase that was present in the speeches at the opening of the event: we are one big family.
Paulo Merisio, Membro do Comitê Executivo da ASSITEJ InternacionalThere are reasons to celebrate: ASSITEJ International is turning 60! Our global community of performing arts for, with and by children and youngsters will come together in Marseille to gather people from different generations and continents to look back to 60 years of international exchange and advocacy // and to envision our future in workshops, round tables and conferences. But that’s not all: Just before we arrive in France, we celebrate the World Day of Theatre for Young Audiences with thousands of activities around the globe focusing on children’s right to participate in arts and culture with the slogan: Take a child to the theatre today.
Julia Dina Heße, Member of the ASSITEJ International Executive CommitteeWe too often hear that children and young people are spectators of tomorrow, or citizens of tomorrow. I am happy to say that this is not the case - today’s children and young people are spectators of today and citizens of today. I have read somewhere that children are serious people. Will you believe that? Well look out, it is all the more true compared to many past and contemporary world leaders.
Yannick Boudeau, Member of the ASSITEJ International Executive CommitteeYet, amidst this turbulence, I find myself filled with both regret and hope. While I feel profound sorrow that the younger generation must witness such instability, I am deeply moved by the response of Millennials and Gen Z, particularly young women, who have been at the forefront of the impeachment demonstrations. They have transformed the nature of protest itself, replacing traditional candlelight vigils with cheerful light sticks from pop concerts. Even in the harsh winter weather, they continue their steadfast vigil, offering a glimmer of hope in what otherwise feels like a gloomy New Year.
