The annual conference of the ASSITEJ Small Countries Network took place in Nicosia, Cyprus, between 31 October and 2 November 2024, during the Mitsikouri Festival, organised by ASSITEJ Cyprus. ASSITEJ National Centres and Affiliates from Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Cyprus, Iceland and San Marino were represented, while Prazan Prostor from Montenegro was invited as a guest, with the potential of soon joining both ASSITEJ as well as the Network. The delegates discussed ways of further developing their collaboration, as well as the Network’s future plans.
During the conference, the ScenoScapes project also took place. The project, co-organised by ASSITEJ Cyprus and the Cyprus National Centre of OISTAT (CYCSTAT) gave the opportunity to 8 emerging set designers from the small countries of Europe to work on “green” set design in the performing arts for children and young people. The artists were mentored by the renowned Cypriot set designers Andy Bargilly and Elena Katsouri, as well as by the Greek theatre director Giannis Karaoulis. They worked together on set design ideas for Anya Reiss’ adaptation for teenagers of “Spring Awakening”, by Frank Wedekind.
The work produced during the project was presented during a special event at the CYENS Centre of Excellence and Innovation in Nicosia.
The members of the ASSITEJ Small Countries Network are ASSITEJ National Centres or Affiliates of countries with a population of less than 1 000 000 inhabitants, which face common challenges and opportunities because of their countries’ small size. The Network’s next Conference and Next Generation Programme will take place in Luxembourg, in June 2025.
