An invitation by the Cyprus Ministry of Culture to ASSITEJ Cyprus to participate in the 37th Guadalajara International Book Fair led to a collaboration between the ASSITEJ national centres of Cyprus and Mexico for a reading of a well-known Cypriot play in Spanish translation. The reading took place on 29 November at the European Union Pavilion of the Fair, the second-largest book fair in the world. The European Union was this year’s Guest of Honour.
The play “Spanos and the forty dragons”, adapted for the theatre by Alexia Papalazarou, is based on a traditional Cypriot folktale and was first presented in 2022 by the Antilogos Theatre, Cyprus. The tale’s publication, as well as the theatre production, included illustrations by the renowned Cypriot printmaker Hambis Tsangaris. The illustrations were also included in the play’s presentation at the Guadalajara Fair.
The Mexican actors who took part in the project were Oz Jimenez and Javier Lopez.
