We regret to announce that Mr. KIM Eui-Kyung, founder of ASSITEJ Korea, passed away at the age of 80 on the 7th of April, 2016.
According to the Korean Theatre Conventions, his funeral was held in Marronnier Park(theatre district) as Korea Theatrical Funeral, where is symbolic place for Korean theatre history, on the 11th of April, 2016, accompanied by a hundred of theatre people.
Mr. KIM Eui-Kyung is highly regarded as a living witness of Korean theatre history including ASSITEJ Korea.
As soon as graduating from Seoul National University, he founded Shilhum Theater Group in 1960 which stands for modern theatre in Korea and then Hyundai Theatre Company in 1976 which was a beginning of Musical in Korea.
Mr. KIM Eui-Kyung had made great achievements in theater and musical field, especially in the international point of view. He founded ASSITEJ Korea and furthered ITI (International Theatre Institute) in Korea to contribute to develop Korean theatre and encourage outstanding artistry. Also, he established BeSeTo Theatre Festival which is a place of cultural exchange among Korea, China and Japan.
He will be deeply missed.
