Something magical for young audiences is taking shape in Bujumbura. From September 24 to 27, 2025, the Diridiri Festival will return for its second edition. And behind the scenes, preparations are already well underway.
Born from the desire to give every child access to inspiring, meaningful theatre, the Diridiri Festival is more than just an event. It’s a celebration of childhood, creativity, and connection. Organised by Umunyinya asbl with support from the French Institute of Burundi and other cultural partners, the festival aims to bring high-quality, inclusive theatre directly to young audiences wherever they are.
In 2023, the first edition set the tone: five original plays, created through residencies in Bujumbura, Gitega, and Ngozi, toured schools and neighborhoods. Children laughed, cried, asked bold questions and, above all, felt seen and heard. That experience laid the foundation for a growing community of artists and educators who believe in the power of theatre to spark change.
This year, the ambition is even greater. New performances are in development, workshops are being planned, and the team is working to ensure that the 2025 edition is rich in emotions, imagination, and shared joy.
Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, or simply someone who believes every child deserves wonder living not far from Burundi, the Diridiri Festival is an event to keep on your radar. Because sometimes, the most lasting gift you can offer a child is a moment of theatre; a space to dream, to question, and to grow.
Once again, Diridiri thought about people with specific needs. To help the artists bring the magic of Diridiri to children in refugee camps, displaced communities, and those with special needs, you are free to support their GoFundMe campaign. Every contribution makes a world of difference.
