The power of theatre to unite, inspire, and heal was fully alive in Lutsk from June 26–28, as the “Chudasiya” Festival reached a milestone, officially achieving All-Ukrainian status for the first time. Hosted at the Volyn Academic Regional Puppet Theatre, the festival became a vibrant hub for young artists, showcasing the resilience and creativity of Ukraine’s youth.
Out of 39 applications from 14 regional centres across the country, 22 youth and children’s theatre companies were selected to perform. The repertoire was wonderfully diverse, ranging from bold interpretations of classical literature to contemporary drama and fairytale plays for early years. Crucially, the festival put children and youth centre.
“Chudasiya” was more than a showcase; it was a platform for professional growth. Young participants engaged in intensive workshops, including “Dialogue with the Body”, “The Actor’s Voice”, and “A Practical Guide to the Film Set”.
Local cultural institutions also opened their doors, weaving history into the festival experience. Participants explored the iconic Lutsk Castle, the “Okolny Castle” art space, and the Volyn Local History Museum, connecting their artistic journey with the region’s rich heritage.
Every day, company directors engaged in deep reflection, receiving constructive feedback from a distinguished professional jury that included Honoured Artists of Ukraine, scenographers, and theatre critics. The prestigious Grand Prix was awarded to the “Murashnyk” People’s Youth Theatre (Samar, Dnipropetrovsk region).
“Chudasiya” proved that even in challenging times, theatre remains a vital space for connection, growth, and shared dreams. The organisers are already looking forward to next year, ready to welcome everyone who believes in the magic of theatre.
