Topic
“THE TENSIONS BETWEEN WHAT SHOULD, WHAT CAN, AND WHAT IS WANTED IN THE PERFORMING ARTS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE”.
“What is imposed, what is allowed and what is creative today”.
The creators of performing arts for children and young people and their works have responded throughout history to the social, political, ideological, and even economic contexts insofar as they, the mediators and the children’s and young audiences themselves share the world reflected on the stage.
There were times of more pedagogical proposals, other times of more free proposals and other times of searching in a field that, fortunately, is always changing and evolving.
However, as we enter the 21st century, we see how certain themes are set as a condition by governments, state or private support organizations, international associations, and other institutions responsible for selecting which projects are suitable or unsuitable and tacitly obliging those who make them to respond to these parameters. The same goes for the mediators (teachers, parents, programmers) who select what the children will see. In this thematic chain, the child is the last link that passively receives what the institutions want to highlight because it positions them according to their interests within the framework of the different prevailing ideologies.
Do the thematic conditioning factors influence the performing arts for today’s children and young people? How are the artists reacting to this phenomenon? Is it accepted, avoided, does it generate acts of censorship or self-censorship, does it promote the diversity of voices or do they unify them? Do they take the child/young spectator into account? Do these thematic suggestions improve or halt the development of the performing arts for children and young people?
The 6th Forum aims to analyze and debate these issues and to offer new perspectives that will strengthen creative freedom, and problematize the Performing Arts as a transformative practice.
