Communication across language barriers with audiences and colleagues is a central element in ASSITEJ as a global association and a topic which is emphasised in the working plan for the term 2017-2020.

On this premise, ASSITEJ is working on the creation of an application for a European cultural cooperation project to be implemented in the framework of the Creative Europe Programme.

The Executive Committee of ASSITEJ is therefore calling for people and institutions that currently work with or wish to work with this topic or have relevant experiences to share in the creation of the project application.

Partners in the project can be EU Festivals, National ASSITEJ Centres, theatres and researchers. Non-EU festivals can be part of the project as associated partners.

We believe that the research and methods developed will be of benefit not only for the partners but for all ASSITEJ members.

Topic

The topic is still under development according to input from the partners. Research questions could be:

  • In what ways can a performance communicate with a multilingual audience?
  • How can a performance reach an audience speaking a different language than the original target audience?
  • What artistic strategies can be used to create community across language barriers in the audience?

These and other questions would be investigated in workshops, co-productions and academic research creating, developing and promoting, in a sustainable way, international good practices.

The project will aim at targeting direct groups such as artists and cultural operators, as well as children and their families as indirect target groups.

Time Frame

The project would start September 2020 and end up September 2024 and take place at the festivals of the partners and at ASSITEJ Artistic Gatherings and World Congress.

The project application will be finalised and handed in the last quarter of 2019 on an expected call for application from Creative Europe.

The creation of the project application will take place by online communication and at open working sessions:

  • 4 – 5 April 2019 at Aprilfestival 2019 in Denmark.
  • 28 April – 3 May 2019 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
  • 2 – 7 September 2019 at ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering 2019 in Kristiansand, Norway

Potential partners should contact ASSITEJ as soon as possible and no later than 25 April 2019.
