The 6th China Children’s Theatre Festival ·International Drama Salon was held on August 23rd and 24th 2016 in Beijing, gathering 16 artists from worldwide ASSITEJ centers, Art Festivals and organizations of United States, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Japan and South Korea. Foreign artists took part in the International Drama Salon, making in-depth explorations and communications with more than 40 Chinese delegates on the development of children’s drama and future communication and cooperation.

The International Drama Salon aims at “building a communicating platform, sharing experience on children’s drama creation and production, boosting sustainable development of children’s dramas.” The Drama Salon this year included 10 keynote speeches and 4 symposiums.

On August 23rd, President of China National Theatre for Children gave an opening speech, introducing the China Childre’sn Drama and the China National Theatre for Children, and then Ms. Vigdís Jakobsdóttir, Vice-President of ASSITEJ and President of ASSITEJ Iceland talked about the Development and Status of ASSITEJ; Ms. Sookhee Kim, President of ASSITEJ South Korea focused on The Development and Status Quo of Korean Children’s Drama; Mr. Johan Storgård, Artistic Director of Svenska Teatern, and CEO of ACE-Production gave a presentation on the Development and Status Quo of Northern European Children’s Drama; Mr. NAKADACHI Kohey, Artistic Director of the TACT/FEST, Board of ASSITEJ Japan and Board of TYA Japan shared his experience on the Operation and management of TACT/FEST. In the afternoon, Ms. Claire Spencer, CEO of Arts Centre Melbourne explained the Operation and Management Model of Arts Centre Melbourne; Mr. Adam Burke, Artistic Director of Children’s Theatre of Charlotte talked on the Production and Performance of US Children Dramas; Ms. Janet Carol Stanford, Artistic Director of Imagination Stage introduced the Art Education and Training in US. Mr. Henrik Køhler, CEO Teatercentrum, Organizer of the Danish April Festival for Theatre for Young Audiences, Chairman of the Board of Scenit shared his experience on Children’s theatre in Denmark & Danish April Festival. Every speaker left several minutes for questioning. Through this rewarding part, all artists shared their experience and took advantage of this opportunity to introduce more fresh air to China.

On August 24th, the symposiums focused on 4 topics, which were the challenges facing on drama creation and performance: How to Overcome Language Barrier in International Communication of Children’s Drama; How Should We Think about the problem of “Childish Orientation” in Children’s Drama Creation?Which Kind of Children Drama Should be Strengthened more, Large shows or Small shows?How to Promote Art Education and Training for Young Audience. These 4 topics evoked heated discussions, exchanging of experiences and showing different views between Chinese delegates and foreign artists.

The International Drama Salon 2016 fully integrated and made use of resources of children theatre all over the world, maximizing the exchange and sharing of children’s drama achievements at home and abroad. It is hoped that through International Drama Salon, we can contribute much more to the development of children’s drama and children’s growth.
