In 2023, in collaboration with the Embassy of Brazil, Romania and Zimbabwe, we held the maiden edition of ABITFA with three international guest performances from Jamaica, Ukraine and Romania; 5 Nigerian performances, from Jos, Portharcourt and Abuja, with workshops, masterclasses and panel discussions, under the theme: Performing Arts, Peacebuilding and the Society.
In 2024, in partnership with the Embassy of Spain, Ireland, Brazil, France (through the French Institute), and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Netherlands, the second edition of ABITFA held, under the theme: ‘The Art of Humanity’, with performances (co-productions) from France, Netherlands, and Spain, and a handful of workshops and masterclasses.
ABITFA 2025, with the theme: I.N.O.V.I.D.C.L.U.S.I.O.N., will be held between November 4-9, with ten (10) performances from Nigeria and abroad, masterclasses, workshops, seminars, and panel discussions. The theme, coined from three words: Innovation, Identity and Inclusion, suggests a holistic approach to theatre and the arts, an ecosystem that values fresh ideas, authentic identities, and inclusive practices.
The Festival and Participation
ABITFA, conceived specifically to celebrate the best of theatre, is an international platform where theatre lovers can attend and watch performances, and where artists from all over the world share artistic excellence, innovation and explore the intersections between various theatrical genres. It is designed to be the biggest artistic showcase in the city of Abuja/Nigeria, and will include complementary awards to deserving individuals and organisations in recognition of their contributions to the art scene in Nigeria.
Participation at the festival is open to performing troupes from around the world.
