Tijuana Hace Teatro and the Centro Cultural Tijuana will host the 4th edition of the Jornadas de Teatro Infancias y Juventudes THT from August 21-25. This event brings together artists, academics, and managers working in Theater for Childhood and Youth to share artistic, academic, and reflective sessions, including 5 theater performances, 4 workshops, and 3 discussion panels.
The inaugural show, “Whoop! Whoop!, Boing,” by Espacio Invisible, will offer an interactive scenic experience based on Clown and Circus Arts. It will be followed by the premiere of “Hombre Lunar,” a Teatro en Resistencia production that demonstrates how dreams keep the moon afloat in space.
Silent theater will feature “La Mancha de Clown Quijote” by Abordo Teatro, using shadows and clowning to tell its story. The Radio Gorila project will present “Origami Tropical,” a paper and music show for the whole family. Finally, Tijuana Hace Teatro’s comedy “Vote por el León” will explore the jungle’s choice between Revolution and Democracy.
In the academic field, workshops include “Writing About Your Own Artistic Work” by Nadxeli Yrízar Carrillo and Humberto Pérez Mortera, aimed at performing artists seeking to reflect on and write about their practice. “Somos Garabatos,” led by Tanya Covarrubias and Cristóbal Barreto Heredia, will create new bonds of communication and coexistence among participating families through art. For teachers, Denisse Zúñiga Gómez will lead “Imaginative Learning for Teachers,” focusing on strategies for incorporating artistic language into schools. Kostia Hernández will offer a practical workshop, “An Approach to Clown and Physical Comedy,” exploring the technical principles of Clowning through group and individual exercises.
Reflective discussions will include panels on various topics related to stagecraft for children and youth. The first, moderated by Denisse Zúñiga, will feature Ricardo Avila, Griselda Hernández, Michel Ramos, and Terezina Vital, discussing their experiences and challenges in “Working With and For Adolescents: Experiences of Creation and Challenges.”
Musicians Cristóbal Barreto, Jesús Gallardo, and Jassiel Santillán will discuss how they create music or sound atmospheres for theater in the panel “Music for the Stage: Pathways to Designing the Sonic Experience in Theater,” moderated by Yoall Morales. Finally, young voices will be heard in “Theater Made by Adolescents: Why Do We Make Theater?”, a dialogue between Ramón Verdugo (artistic director of the Jornadas) and student participants from the Festival Interprepas THT, which celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2024, about their motivations and experiences in theater.
These Jornadas de Teatro, a collaboration between Tijuana Hace Teatro and the Tijuana Cultural Center, aim to create a platform for rethinking Theater for Childhood and Youth. This initiative facilitates the exchange of artistic experiences and the creation of dialogue spaces for artists, teachers, young students, and, of course, the children and families participating in the activities.
