ASSITEJ India deeply mourns the passing of Udaybhanu Garikapatti on 1st May 2025. A devoted thespian, mentor, and advocate for Theatre and Performing Arts for Young Audiences (TYA), Udaybhanu served as Secretary of ASSITEJ India from 2013–2016 and Vice President from 2019–2025.
In 1989, he founded the theatre group Bhoomika, through which he wrote, directed, and trained young people in the craft of theatre—often producing plays in his mother tongue, Telugu. He worked closely with children and youth across schools and voluntary organisations. Even towards the end, he remained deeply concerned about his unfinished work. We extend our support and best wishes to his younger colleagues, who now carry his legacy forward.
Several members of ASSITEJ India remember Udaybhanu fondly—as a keen learner and a man of unwavering action. Imran Khan reflects on their friendship, one that defied a 40-year age gap. To Imran, Udaybhanu’s openness to observe, listen, and learn made him a unique presence who faced challenges with grace. He was disciplined, energetic, and lighthearted and never missed his morning yoga and share of drinks at exactly 8 p.m. – not a minute early!
Dr. Ashish Ghosh recalls first meeting Udaybhanu in 2012 during a drama workshop in a village in Andhra Pradesh. They spent a week together, and Ashish introduced him to ASSITEJ India. Udaybhanu joined with enthusiasm and quickly became a key contributor—organising seminars, co-leading the International TYA Festival Tifli, recruiting new members, and representing India at ASSITEJ Congresses. His efforts brought momentum and vision to the community.
As the Secretary, he led the organisation to national prominence—spearheading seminars with the University of Hyderabad and University of Allahabad, and expanding the Tifli International TYA Festival to include Hyderabad as a satellite city, defying financial loss. His leadership also saw India hosting the ASSITEJ Asia Meet in Chennai, building crucial international connections.
As Vice President, he remained a steady and visionary presence—supporting artists, mentoring youth, and championing the role of theatre in education and community. His work reflected a rare blend of artistic excellence, empathy, and commitment to young audiences.
Udaybhanu leaves behind a legacy that is both inspiring and irreplaceable. His passing is a profound loss not only to ASSITEJ India but also to the global TYA community.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and to the Bhoomika team, which he nurtured with love and passion.
Rest in peace, Udaybhanu. Your light lives on.
