From 31 August to 6 September 2026, the Cradle of Creativity festival, presented by ASSITEJ South Africa, showcases 21 theatre, dance, circus and interdisciplinary productions from 10 countries at the Market Theatre, Johannesburg. Marking 50 years since young people took to the streets in the Soweto Uprisings, an event that profoundly changed the trajectory of South Africa, the festival this year celebrates young people’s courage and activism, while showcasing African stories to the world. Alongside the performances, a professional development programme supports artists to connect, create and exchange ideas around TYA. A highlight will be the launch of the Arts-rich Schools programme, spearheaded by ASSITEJ SA, and supported by the Department of Basic Education, which is also a partner in the festival.
In anticipation of the Cradle of Creativity festival, ASSITEJ SA will be hosting Cradle Connect Africa – a series of conversations between African participants that will take place on Facebook Live on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 15h00 SAST. In addition, the Cradle goes on tour to Kimberley, Northern Cape, for the first time, bringing a range of productions to children and young people in this often neglected province. De Stilte dance company, SboNdaba Dance, Amandla Danca Teatro and the production Born Naked are among the highlights of this touring festival, which also includes workshops for artists from the province.
